Our team

Homecare Medical employs subject matter experts focussed on quality, and on providing access to joined-up health and wellness support. Together we are delivering a national telehealth service that meets the needs of all New Zealanders and provides a platform for continuous care, innovation and improvement.

We’re led by an experienced and knowledgeable board of six and a chief executive, and our teams include: managers, consumer representatives, registered nurses, mental health and addictions professionals and specially trained support staff, and advisory committees.

Andrew Slater (CEO)

Andrew’s background is in the health sector where he has held roles in transformation, strategy, human resources and change management. He first got involved with Homecare Medical to develop our telehealth and mHealth strategy and is now fully on board as Homecare Medical’s first CEO. In this strategic and operational leadership role Andrew is responsible for realising the vision the Government and Homecare Medical have for the new national telehealth service. He played a key role in leading the ‘transition’ team to fully integrate services to Homecare Medical.

He is now focussed on expanding the capacity and reach of health, wellness and counselling services to enable all New Zealanders to access quality care and support within their community in a way that is relevant to them personally. He is also responsible for ensuring Homecare Medical continues to be a trusted service, seamlessly connecting people with the right care and support.

Before joining Homecare Medical, Andrew had a strategic leadership role with Vigil Monitoring that specialises in real-time health monitoring technology. Andrew worked with Vigil’s partners to deliver solutions to the market. Prior to this he was responsible for planning, service development and transformation for St John. In this role he led the development of the first national plan for the ambulance service, including health sector engagement.

Anne Batemen (Head of Mental Health Services)

Aanne Bateman

Anne joined the team as Head of Mental Health Services in June 2017. She’s responsible for the overall delivery of our mental health and addictions programs. Her focus is to bring strong mental health leadership and build external relationships to be at the forefront of enabling improved outcomes for New Zealander’s.

Anne began her career as a clinician and has spent the last 14 years working at a systems level in various levels of government as well as non-governmental organisations. She is originally from the United States and moved to New Zealand in 2010. She has had various roles, including governance, development, management, planning and funding, quality improvement and clinical practice.

Her specialities are strategic planning, innovation, organisational development and continuous quality improvement. She holds a Master of Science in Social Work and a Master of Public Administration, is certified in Six Sigma and a Prince 2 practitioner with active membership in the Institute of Directors and the American Evaluation Association.

Robyn Bern (Director of Communications and Community Engagement)

Robyn is an experienced communicator with a wealth of valuable experience in the health, telecommunications and creative sectors in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Her previous roles include media, communications, and marketing positions at St John, Vodafone, Alcatel and Xtra. She also has experience running her own communications consultancy.

Robyn understands well how clear, consistent, transparent, reliable and relevant communication, linking messages to an organisation’s strategy and to customer need  can build brand, reputation, profile and confidence, and engagement. Robyn heads the team focussed on telling our stories, ensuring true sector and service user engagement, community co-design, trusted brands, and innovative clinically led campaigns and content.

Robin Cooper (Special Projects Lead)

Robin joined the company in November 2013 to oversee the genesis of Homecare Medical. She has worked in many areas in healthcare, including five years as operations manager of Medlab, followed by five years with SGS, a Swiss-based testing and inspection company. As an independent consultant, she has written business cases, funding applications, designed and implemented operational processes and managed staff in engineering, biotechnology, dental, medical labs and orthotics businesses. Robin has played an integral role in Homecare Medical being awarded the national telehealth service contract, in seeing the service go live in November 2015, and in leading the Quality function.

Robin is currently focussed on the crisis mental health services project, working with the Ministry of Health and Police, and supporting the reporting and analytics for Homecare Medical with the systems and processes she established.

Nick Davies (Head of Finance and Corporate Services)

Welshman Nick moved to New Zealand in February 2016 and started at Homecare Medical in May. Originally from Swansea, Nick studied management and accounting at the University of Southampton. After graduation, he spent time in Australia where he worked at the Sydney Morning Herald in sales.

In 2006, he returned to the UK, landed a job at Deloitte, became a chartered accountant. In 2011, Nick moved into the aviation industry, working for British Airports Authority (now Heathrow Airport Holdings), the company that owned and operated Heathrow and Stansted airports. A career highlight was overseeing the sale of Stansted to Manchester Airport Group. In 2014, Nick became financial controller for High St fashion retailer White Stuff. Nick’s role at Homecare Medical involves elements of finance, human resources, IT, corporate services, contracts and property management.

Nicola Russell  (Head of Health Services)

Nicola Russell

Nicola joined the Homecare Medical team in October 2015, as one of the nursing Team Managers, and quickly stepped up to lead the nursing service as the Service Delivery Manager for the Healthline and Out of Hours nursing services. Nicola has worked in a number of public and private sector health management roles, most recently within the field of community based brain and spinal injury rehabilitation.

As Head of Health Services, Nicola’s portfolio covers the Out of Hours, Healthline and Emergency Triage and she is focused on improving the experience of service users across all the Homecare Medical services, and growing these health services to ensure all customers can access them in a way that is meaningful for them.

Sharryn Gannon (Clinical Director)

Sharryn Gannon

Sharryn has extensive experience in public and private health services including engagement with not for profit organisations, academia and the contact centre sector. She is a recognised leader in tele-enabled health services in Australasia having led the establishment or managed the operations of a number of health contact centres.

Sharryn has extensive and in depth clinical governance and change management experience across multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams as well as solid operations management. She joined Homecare Medical in October 2016 as Clinical Director focusing on innovative ways to improve customer experience. Sharryn leads the Clinical Effectiveness and Improvement Team.

Paul Lambert (Programme Director)

Paul is an IT professional with over 20 years’ experience working in Australian and New Zealand organisations, with the majority of that time as a consultant to large public sector organisations. Paul specialises in delivery of large and complex projects, particularly those that necessitate delivery to a business case, a set of specified business outcomes or a set of formal requirements. This includes the ongoing processes of replanning and optimising delivery schedules to maximise business value within project constraints. Paul has skills across the full life cycle of design, build and test, and both custom and packaged solutions. He most often fills delivery management or solution architecture roles. Most recently Paul worked for the Australian Ministry of Health as delivery lead on the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record system. Prior to that, he was solution architect for the Australian Tax Office Change Programme.

Brian O'Connell (Head of Partnerships – Central South)

Brian joined the Homecare Medical team in Christchurch in August 2015 in a relationship management role where he developed and maintained networks for the National Telehealth Service. In September 2016 he was appointed Head of Partnerships for the South Island and greater Wellington regions. Brian’s focus is on partnerships and co-design, health outreach, deep stakeholder engagement and developing links with priority communities, consumer cohorts and the wider health community.

Prior to joining Homecare Medical, Brian held multiple management roles in St John, leading property projects, developing strong links between ambulance and health services, fundraising initiatives, community services, and youth leadership programmes within local communities throughout the South Island.

Maryanne Thomson (Head of Partnerships – North)

Maryanne was operations manager at Homecare Medical from early 2014 through until mid-2015, before taking up her latest challenge. She has been instrumental in successfully setting up the clinical hub with St John and in building up our service levels in the after-hours service. Maryanne is now focused on growing Homecare Medical and on developing and managing key relationships with our partner organisations. She has a nursing background, having worked in a number of secondary care positions in New Zealand and overseas. Prior to joining Homecare Medical she was national manager at the Child Cancer Service, where she led and managed: the service and employees; family support service delivery; and administration and operation management of all properties and offices. Prior to that she was a high achieving sales and account specialist at Baxter Healthcare.


The Clinical Governance Committee

The Clinical Governance Committee (CGC) is the sub-committee of the Homecare Medical Board responsible for supporting clinical excellence across our services through the Clinical Governance Framework.

The CGC sets and oversees the clinical direction and performance of Homecare Medical and, in partnership with the Board and management, ensures services delivered by Homecare Medical are clinically safe, effective, patient centred, culturally sensitive, equitable and timely. The CGC monitors service effectiveness, service integration, future service improvements, clinical and counselling incidents, and clinical quality and audit activities.

Dr Hillary Gray (Chair)

Hillary was appointed to the Pegasus Board in 2013 and is Vice Chair. She was appointed as Chair of the Homecare Medical Clinical Governance Committee in April 2016.

Hillary has been in general practice at the North Avon Medical Centre since 2010 and is a partner there.  She graduated from the University of Otago Medical School in 1989 and is a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Hillary also has an honours degree in law from Canterbury University. 

Her working career has spanned a wide range of areas including general practice and managing the 24 Hour Surgery in Christchurch, ownership and operation of retirement villages, management consultancy both as a private business owner and for Deloitte Touche Tohmastu, and public sector advisory work. She is a member of the Veterans Affairs Appeals Authority.

Associate Professor Simon Adamson

Simon is a clinical psychologist with many years of experience in the addiction field. He is an associate professor and deputy director of the National Addiction Centre, Department of Psychological Medicine, at the University of Otago Christchurch and holds a concurrent clinical post with the Community Alcohol and Drug Service, Canterbury District Health Board. Simon also operates a private practice providing assessment and treatment for people with a range of substance and behavioural addictions. He has published over 50 academic papers in addiction and is a member of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists, the Society of the Study of Addiction, and the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs. He has been a board member of the Alcohol Drug Association New Zealand (ADANZ), from 2000 to 2015 and is a member of the National Committee on Addiction Treatment (NCAT). 

Dr Stephen Child

Steve is a Canadian-trained general physician with a respiratory interest, who immigrated to New Zealand in late 1991. He worked in Dargaville for two and a half years before moving to his current role as the Director of Clinical Training at Auckland District Health Board in 1994.

Steve sits on several national, regional and local committees. He has a vision to improve the education and training of junior doctors and thereby ensure that New Zealand has a medical workforce that is well staffed and capable to look after its future medical needs. He is the Chair of the NZMA Board.

Dr David Codyre

David joined Homecare Medical in October 2016 as Clinical Lead – Mental Health and Addictions. David is a psychiatrist with considerable experience working in the community mental health sector in New Zealand.

Currently working with East Tamaki Healthcare (ETHC), David is leading the development of an innovative integrated primary mental health programme to the network of ETHC clinics. He sits on the advisory board to the NZ Depression Awareness Campaign and is a member of the Mental Health and Addictions Integration Leadership Group for Counties Manukau DHB, the Key to Life Trust (which supports mental health promotion/suicide prevention), the National Mental Health and Addiction Workforce Plan sector expert group, the “Mental Health - Fit for the Future” working group to the Ministry of Health, and the sector leaders group developing the Mental Health and Addictions Improvement Programme with the Health Quality and Safety Commission.

Dr Karl Cole

Karl Cole

Karl is a GP partner at Papatoetoe Family Doctors in Auckland and is ProCare Clinical Director of Information. He is the immediate past Clinical Director of Homecare Medical.

Karl worked for 10 years as a Medical Officer in the NZ Army which saw him deployed as Officer Commanding of the NZ field hospital in East Timor. He completed health management and heath informatics qualifications and led the medical team with the Defence Special Forces and the Auckland/Northern region. Karl was instrumental in Defence change management, becoming the National Defence Performance Improvement Manager, implementing a single health electronic record, dietitian services and changes in rehabilitation. He was awarded the NZ Army citation for his work with the international team on improving soldier performance in the field, leading to a strong interest in human factors.

Karl became a FRNZGP in 2004. Upon leaving the NZ Army in 2007 he has worked both clinically and in PHO management. He is on various boards related to informatics and primary to secondary care integration. He has overseen ProCare’s move to online education, and was clinical lead for the drive to improve primary care ICT. He was asked to be an eHealth ambassador by the National IT Board, and is a keen advocate for patient portals.

Dr Siale Foliaki

Siale joined Homecare Medical Clinical Lead – Crisis Services and is the Lead Psychiatrist for the development and national rollout of the of the crisis mental health services project with the Ministry of Health. He is a vocationally registered psychiatrist and a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Siale is unique in having a dual fellowship in both Adult and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

For the last ten years Siale has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Counties Manukau District Health Board developing various mental health services in secondary care with a strong involvement in primary care mental health integration. He has developed his career primarily as a clinician but has also undertaken extensive research projects the most significant being his involvement in the New Zealand Mental Health Survey Te Rau Hinengaro. He has had significant involvement in policy level roles with the Ministry of Health and the Mental Health Commission and had a key role in writing the Cultural Competency guidelines for Pacific people for the New Zealand Medical Council.

Dr Kristin Good

Kristin joined the Homecare Medical team in March 2017 as Clinical Lead – Primary Health to provide medical input with particular focus on primary healthcare and population health. She also works on the senior management team at Auckland District Health Board as a Director of Primary Care in Mental Health and Addictions in a strategic leadership role. Her main project is reducing physical health inequitable patients with serious mental illness and improving integrated care across the primary/secondary continuum.

As the New Zealand representative on the ePPOC (Electronic Persistent Pain Outcomes Collaboration) Scientific and Clinical Advisory Committee Kristin works to help improve services and outcomes for patients suffering with chronic pain through benchmarking of care and treatment.

Working with Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) as a senior medical advisor Kristin has supported the primary care, pain and mental injury categories for the past three years and still practises as a General Practitioner specialising in occupational medicine.

Dr Jamie Shepherd

Jamie has working general practice since 2007, has a strong interest in virtual health and health informatics. He is a GP owner at Mission Bay Doctors in Auckland and also maintains the role of ProCare Assc. Clinical Director of IT and Education. Jamie is a keen educator and has been involved in GP registrar (GPEP2) education and entrance examination for the training program in Auckland. He also sits as the RNZCGP representative on the IT vendor PMS forum.

Jamie has working general practice since 2007, has a strong interest in virtual health and health informatics. He is a GP owner at Mission Bay Doctors in Auckland and also maintains the role of ProCare Assc. Clinical Director of IT and Education. Jamie is a keen educator and has been involved in GP registrar (GPEP2) education and entrance examination for the training program in Auckland. He also sits as the RNZCGP representative on the IT vendor PMS forum. He has a vision to improve access of primary care healthcare by utilising innovative health IT systems, especially with virtual health alongside training and education of general practioners.

Associate Professor Nikki Turner

Nikki is an academic General Practitioner and an Associate Professor in the Department of General Practice and Primary Care, University of Auckland. She is an honorary Associate Professor at the University of Otago Wellington. Her roles include Director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre, which is also part of the Conectus alliance, a University of Auckland collaboration of child health services. She works part-time as a General Practitioner at the Pacific Health Medical Centre, Strathmore, Wellington.

Nikki's academic interests are in immunisation, primary healthcare, preventive child health, and child poverty. She represents the RNZCGP in child health interests, and is a health spokesperson for the Child Poverty Action Group. She is a member of the World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization.

Dr Vanessa Weenink

Vanessa was born and raised in Blenheim and moved south for study at Otago Medical School where she graduated in 2002. A career in the military took her to Afghanistan and East-Timor and she continues to serve actively as a Major in the Army. Recently she was appointed to a new role in the New Zealand Defence Force as Chair of a Primary Care Reference Group. This group oversees clinical governance of Medical Practitioners in the NZDF.

Vanessa has been based in Canterbury in general practice since leaving the regular Army in 2010. Vanessa is partner at Papanui Medical Centre, which is a large urban practice with 11,000 patients and nine partners. She is also a GP teacher with a first year GP registrar. Vanessa is enthusiastic about general practice and enjoys building long-term patient-doctor relationships. Her philosophy is that general practice is a partnership, which aims to improve health and wellbeing.

Dr Matthew Wright

Dr Matt Wright

Matt has been a consultant with Homecare Medical since the National Telehealth Service launched. He is involved with supporting the Clinical Effectiveness and Improvement Team in reviewing clinical content, promoting efficiency of advice in the system, and leads the creation of data important for Clinical Quality improvement for this company.

Matt is an Urgent Care doctor with 10 years’ experience. He trained at the University of Otago Medical School and spent time in the UK and Ireland, before settling back in Auckland. He currently works part-time in Middlemore Hospital emergency department and casually in the private White Cross Urgent Care clinics

Matt completed an MBA from Cambridge University in 2011 and spends most of his time now in Health Consulting, where he has a passion for system level improvement and relationship building between organisations. His strength is in data capture, analysis and understanding, linking data between businesses for maximum insight.


The Clinical Effectiveness and Improvement Team

Reporting to the Clinical Governance Committee (CGC), the Clinical Effectiveness and Improvement Team (CEIT) is the operational arm of the CGC, assisting the management team to implement Homecare Medical’s clinical governance framework. This ensures that our services are clinically safe, effective, patient centred, culturally sensitive, equitable and timely.
